How Can You Stop Gout Attacks?
Gout is a disease that affects the cartilage in tendons, joints, and other body tissues. Sometimes called metabolic arthritis, this disease is most common among men and women who are in their post-menstrual stage. When the affected area swells up and inflames, it can cause severe pain, sometimes even to the point of immobility. Chronic attacks, if left unattended, can lead to damage in the tissue. Although this is a disease with no known cure, progression into extreme cases and control of attacks can be prevented.
It is a known fact that this disease is inherited genetically. Those who have the condition or have family history of this disease are advised to take a low uric acid diet or abstain from purine sources of food. Along with lots of water intake and no alcohol, you can eliminate chances of gout attacks from occurring.
Most attacks usually last several hours to a few days. If left untreated, this condition can worsen over time and the chances of it happening will become more frequent. Thus, it is essential that immediate treatment and medical attention be given in cases of attacks from gout.
Symptoms of this condition include tenderness and severe pain in affected joints of the body. You will notice warmth, redness, and swelling in those areas. A most common area of affliction is the areas of the big toe, but this does not exclude other areas, such as the elbows, knees, wrists, and fingers from being affected. More commonly than not, these conditions will occur at night or during cold times of the day. This is because the formations of uric crystals react to cooler temperatures and is also another reason these conditions are more prevalent in colder areas of the world where people eat more foods containing purine.
Attacks of gout result from high content of uric acid in the blood, which is taken from foods that are high in purine. Although the body creates uric acid on its own, excess levels of purine can no longer be filtered by the kidney. Eventually, this will lead to kidney stones and kidney damage, aside from attacks of gout.
Try to stay away from foods, such as red meat, which include beef, lamb, and pork. Also, avoid mollusks and shellfish, caffeine, yeast products, fatty fish, legumes, mushrooms, and spinach. Although spinach does not contain any purine, it does have oxalic acid that decreases the effectiveness of the body to eliminate uric acid.
If you realize symptoms of gout in the early stages, a more preventive course of action can be taken to reduce the chances of progression of the disease.
