The Common Symptoms of Gout

Gout attacks usually occur later in life, from middle age onwards. At that point, most gout sufferers have had a history of eating a lot of meat, consuming too much alcohol, such as beer, and not taking care of their bodies. As uric acid builds up in their bodies, crystals begin to form around the joints to cause their initial gout attacks.

The first manifestation of gout is usually what is called podagra, which refers to . Many gout attacks occur during the night, and the pain is usually so intense that even just pressing against a pillow or the blanket can be painful. Most gout attacks usually occur very rapidly, and last for a couple of hours into the night, easing off over the following few days. Once the attack has subsided, itching and peeling of the skin around the affected joint may be experienced.

These are just typical symptoms and are not experienced by every patient with gout. Conversely, these symptoms are not enough to form a diagnosis of gout. However, neither should these symptoms be disregarded. Anyone suffering from attacks of pain similar to those described above should seek medical attention to determine whether they are suffering from gout or some other disease.

Although the joint of the big toe is most commonly the first to suffer painful gout attacks, making walking rather difficult, gout can strike any joint in the body. This includes wrists, fingers, ankles, elbows, and the knees.

In many cases, these symptoms of gout arise after an illness or surgery, and though they may be intensely painful, they are quite short-lived. These attacks are known as acute gout attacks. Chronic gout, on the other hand, is much less painful, but occurs for longer and more often. Because of this, chronic gout may sometimes be misdiagnosed as rheumatism or arthritis. In fact, the condition has already been misdiagnosed a number of times in the medical world already.

Again, anyone suffering from any symptoms similar to these gout symptoms should seek medical help immediately. While the attacks may subside quickly, as in acute gout, or be of low intensity, as in chronic gout, it is still important to diagnose their causes right away. Proper diet and lifestyle changes can then be put into place if gout is diagnosed to be the root cause of these symptoms. Along with medication, this regimen can help to reduce or eliminate the occurrence of gout attacks entirely.
